The aim of the Academy of Advanced Life Support is to help registered Doctors, Nurses and Advanced Life Support Paramedics, regardless of their level of skill and knowledge, improve their understanding, ability and confidence with respect to the techniques of resuscitation and emergency care.
Professor Walter Kloeck founded AALS after decades at the forefront of resuscitation science — shaping national and international standards for emergency cardiovascular care.
Professor Walter Kloeck's post-graduate medical career started in 1978 with an intense interest in Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine. He has devoted his life to raising the standard of emergency care both in South Africa and world-wide.
Walter has served as a Reviewer and Editorial Board Member of Resuscitation — the official journal of the European Resuscitation Council — for over 12 years. In recognition of his sustained international contribution, he was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the ERC in 2008, and in 2010 received the inaugural Fellowship of the European Resuscitation Council (FERC) at the Resuscitation Congress in Porto. He is the first person in the southern hemisphere to hold both honours.
He has personally presented over 1,000 ACLS and 600 PALS courses on behalf of the American Heart Association, and was awarded International Fellowship of the AHA (FAHA) in 2011. The University of the Witwatersrand has also conferred the title Honorary Adjunct Professor of Emergency Medicine in recognition of over 25 years of dedicated service.
